Dr Bobo Lo and Sam Roggeveen in-conversation at the 'China, Russia and global order' public lecture, August 2019

Aims

A Background Paper collating and assessing existing knowledge on EU energy security concerns and the potential Russia challenge to a common energy market. To be completed by the EPW Postdoctoral Fellow.
A Policy Brief paper disseminating the shared challenge energy security poses to Europe and Australia. To be completed by key international energy security experts and shared widely on social media.
A Policy Workshop in Canberra, featuring 6 international energy experts with participation from Australian academics from a range of disciplines (including: area studies, strategic studies, resource economics) and Australian policy makers from government departments.
A Public Forum in Canberra, following the EPW, to disseminate the workshop findings to a broader range of policy makers and to members of the diplomatic community, graduate students, emerging security studies scholars and the public.
A peer reviewed journal article written by key scholars at the workshop on cross-country cooperation on Russia’s foreign energy strategy towards the European and Australian energy markets.

Public Lecture: China, Russia and global order (21 August 2019)

This public lecture was hosted in joint partnership between the ANU Centre for European Studies (ANUCES) and the Lowy Institute. In his address, pre-eminent Russia scholar Bobo Lo asked whether this ‘axis of authoritarians’ is as close and purposeful as it seems. Are Beijing and Moscow engaged in a common enterprise against Western interests and values? Or does the real threat to a liberal world order come from within? The event began with a presentation from Dr Bobo Lo where he addressed these complex questions. This was followed by a conversation between Dr Bobo Lo and Sam Roggeveen, Director of the International Security Program, and finally a Q&A session with the crowd. Event flyer

Round Table: Russian energy strategy and implications for Australia (20 August 2019)

An invitation only round table discussion was held at the ANU Centre for European Studies that looked at Russia's Asia Pacific energy interests and the implications for Australia. Session one dealt with the Asia-Pacific energy outlook. Session two focussed on Russia's foreign energy strategy. Session three included presentations and discussions on Sino-Russian energy relations. This was followed by a presentation from Air Vice-Marshal John Blackburn AO (retd) on the current Australian approach to energy security and priorities for the future. Public Seminar: Turkey-EU relations in the axis of energy wars with Russia (13 August 2019)

This seminar saw Associate Professor Digdem Soyaltin Colella from the Department of Political Science at Altınbaş University in Istanbul examin how the energy sector has become a battlefield between Turkey, Russia and the EU (as well as the US). It also discussed how the Turkey-Russia energy dynamic might affect Turkey’s relations with key Western allies, including NATO. Event flyer
