Dr Nina Markovic Khaze obtained a PhD in Political Science at the Australian National University in 2015. As part of her doctoral research, she spent time in various European and Australian archives investigating diplomatic history of EU-Yugoslavia relations. With an EU postgraduate grant, she spent a semester at the LUISS University in Rome in 2012. She is currently Visiting Fellow at the ANU Centre for European Studies. Nina recently taught International Relations at the University of New South Wales. She provides a weekly political commentary for SBS radio. Previously, she was working for the Australian Parliamentary Research Service as a senior researcher (PSL1) for Europe and Middle East. Her research interests include the EU, Australia, Russia, the Balkans and China's New Silk Road in Southeast Europe.

My PhD research project investigates political and diplomatic relations between the European Union and Serbia since 1990 to present day. In particular, this thesis is looking at diplomatic strategies of the European Union towards “third states” (non-EU members) using the case study of Serbia, and the development of enlargement policy for the Western Balkans. This research relies on qualitative data gathered from first-hand interviews, and employs the analysis of primary and secondary sources including in local languages.

In April 2012, I delivered an intensive course on “Comparative politics of the Balkan Pensinsula since the Second World War” at LUISS University, Rome. In this capacity I mentored a group of students involved in a project concerning Bosnia-Herzegovina.
