EUSI, ANUCES and ESC collaborated in terms of networking with European studies centres in the Asia Pacific region, and of joint research on Europe from an interdisciplinary perspective, including, but not limited to, economics, law, and politics. We focused on regulation problems related to the global financial crisis (GFC), under discussion in forums such as the G20. Before the rapid diffusion of the GFC from one country and region to the next, the question arose regarding the desirability (and feasibility) of establishing regulation across borders in the world economy.

• European Studies Centre (ESC), University of Oxford

Research period: Two years, 2010-11

• First year (March): kick-off, two-day meeting in Tokyo to discuss ideas on ‘Regulation Across Borders’, with five scholars from the University of Oxford, and five from the ANU joining  colleagues from Hitotsubashi and Keio universities.
• Second year: a conference in Tokyo with papers presented on the same topic. EUSI, and a Hitotsubashi & Keio universities Graduate School Project will finance the same visiting scholars from the ANU and the University of Oxford who participated in the first year’s meeting.

Outcomes: ANU will publish a book containing the conference papers.
