Understanding EU Trade - Melbourne Workshop

Trade negotiations between Australia and the European Union are underway. This EU funded Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Project aims to help Australian policy makers, industry and civil society understand European Union trade policy.

The training will include:

  • an accessible explanation of
  • how the EU works and EU trade policymaking;
  • a panel discussion on issues and challenges for the proposed Free Trade Agreement;
  • details on key current issues such as Geographic Indications, Investor-State Dispute Settlement, Services and Agricultural Trade; and
  • information on how to find out more.

  • 9.30am, Welcome and introductions: Dr Annmarie Elijah, ANU Centre for European Studies (Introductory remarks and course objectives)
  • 9.45am, Who’s who in the EU? And how does EU trade policy work? Dr Annmarie Elijah, ANU Centre for European Studies (Presentation and Q&A)

  • 11am, Investor-State Dispute Settlement: What is the EU position? Ivana Damjanovic, ANU Centre for European Studies (Presentation and Q&A)
  • 11.45am, Australia-EU FTA: Issues and Challenges: Dr Maria Garcia, University of Bath and Professor Bruce Wilson, RMIT University (Panel discussion and Q&A)

This workshop is jointly presented by the ANU Centre for European Studies and the EU Centre at RMIT University. It is designed to support stakeholders from different organisations and sectors who may have little or no familiarity with the EU.
