Certain sessions from this conference are now available as: MP3 (please listen to the files above) and PDF (please see the contributions by The Hon. Michael Kirby AC CMG and Justice John Dowsett, Federal Court of Australia - as a courtesy to the presenters, please contact them for permission to refer to the text of their presentations for the purpose of further research)

The judicial systems of the European Union and Australia share several characteristics that, when combined, are unique in legal and judicial systems across the world: first, that federal/supranational jurisdiction is vested in, and enforceable by, State/national courts and, secondly, a court that sits at the apex of a largely integrated judicial system. The judiciaries in both systems have also played crucial roles in defining and shaping their respective polities, establishing the constitutional contours within which the other political branches must operate.
