Poland/Russia: An End to Centuries of Hostility
This seminar is jointly presented by the Russian and East European Seminar Series and the ANU Centre for European Studies.
Following the first round of the presidential elections in Poland, Dr John Besemeres, Visiting Fellow at the Centre for European Studies, will look at the recent warming of relations between Russia and Poland in the context of the disastrous crash at Smolensk, which killed President Kaczynski and many other members of Poland’s elite. He will argue that Poland under Donald Tusk’s Civic Platform has been retreating from post-communist Poland’s earlier policies towards Russia and its eastern neighbours in the direction of something more resembling the pragmatic approach of most of its EU partners. He will suggest that the rapprochement may yet prove fragile.
