For the first time since becoming a member of the European Union in 2004, Poland is holding the rotating Presidency of the European Council during the second half of 2011. This comes at a time when the European Union is confronted by a growing number of economic concerns that are testing the strength of European integration. Such current issues are an opportunity for the Polish government to contribute to leadership in the ministerial fora of the European Council to find solutions. But the Polish Presidency has also been an opportunity for the Polish government to develop an agenda that focuses on more structural issues and which has three priorities: European integration as a source of growth; secure Europe; and Europe benefiting from openness. In his presentation, HE Jaroszyński will discuss the stance of the Polish government to the current issues facing Europe, as well as how Poland is taking initiatives that foster the three priorities that it has identified to foster European integration.
HE Mr Andrzej Jaroszyński has been Polish Ambassador to Australia since late 2008. Since joining the Polish foreign service in 1990, he has served overseas in Chicago, Washington, as deputy head of mission, and in Oslo, as Ambassador to Norway. Immediately before taking up his current position in Canberra, he was director of the Department of the Americas in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Warsaw. A graduate from the University of Maria Curie-Sklodowska in Lublin, HE Jaroszyński held a number of academic positions at the Catholic University of Lublin, before joining the Polish diplomatic service.
Dr John Besemeres of the ANU Centre for European Studies will offer a brief discussion of HE Jaroszyński’s presentation by focusing on the ways in which the Polish government has enhanced the relations of the EU with neighbouring countries in Central and Eastern Europe.
