About the artist

Angelica Mesiti is one of Australia’s most significant contemporary artists. Now based in Paris, the Sydney-born Mesiti’s work has been exhibited widely throughout Australia, North America and Europe. The National Gallery of Australia has recently acquired its first major work by Mesiti, the three-channel installation The calling (2014). The calling considers the use of whistling languages in communities in Turkey, Greece and the Canary Islands and presents a very moving and beautiful picture of an ancient means of communication now threatened by modern technologies.

NGA is presenting The calling alongside a selection of four other major works by Mesiti, including Citizen's band (2012) and her award-winning work Rapture (silent anthem) (2009). This is the first time a selection of major works by Mesiti have been presented together, providing a perfect opportunity to experience the work of this internationally significant Australian artist.

About the Art and Europe Lecture Series

The National Gallery of Australia partnership with the ANU Centre for European Studies (2015-17) features lectures which showcase European links and influences. With the NGA’s extensive holdings of European art, there are many stories to be told through the collection.

The lectures focus on exploring the many connections between Australian and European history and culture and the Gallery's European art collection.
