Network of Italian Scholars Abroad (NiSA) Conference : Far West / Estremo Occidente

The inaugural lecture of this conference by Professor Remo Bodei, UCLA is now available as MP3 (please listen to the file below):

On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Italian unification this conference will critically analyze the relationship and exchanges between Italy and Australasia. It aims to explore the differences in experiences, language, and ways of thinking of the people who moved between these cultures; understand what role nostalgia, sorrow, and the difficulties of adaptation played in their lives; appreciate their initiative, courage and will to restart life elsewhere, together with their conservation or abandonment of traditional values.

The conference, however, will focus only partially on the relationship between Italy and Australasia. We will situate this particular experience in the more general context of travels, migrations, and discoveries, which characterize the connected histories of continents and oceans in the modern world, and will offer insights into new and changing intellectual identities – both local and global.
