Europe at the Crossroads: Estonian Perspectives on the EU and Eurozone

This public lecture is now available as: MP3 (please listen to the file below in three parts).

Estonia regained its independence on 20 August 1991.  In 2004, Estonia acceded to the EU and joined NATO.  In 2007, it joined the Schengen group of European countries.  Estonia joined the Eurozone in January 2011.  Estonia has reoriented its economy to a market-based economy integrated with the EU. In this presentation, His Excellency Mr Urmas Paet will assert that Europe cannot afford to give up its post-World War II achievements.  He will discuss why Estonia has chosen the path of full integration and belonging to the core of Europe.

His Excellency Mr Urmas Paet has been the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Estonia since April 2005.  Before becoming Foreign Minister, Mr Urmas served as Minister of Culture for two years.  He is a member of the Estonian Reform Party.  From 1999 to 2003, Urmas served as the elder of the Tallinn city district of Nõmme. Before this he worked as a journalist with Estonian Radio and in the news office of the Postimees daily newspaper.  Mr Urmas majored in Political Science, graduating from the University of Tartu in 1996 and from the Master’s Programme in International Relations at the University of Oslo the same year.
