Community leadership in changing the conversation on protection visas
Join us for a presentation outlining what the Australian Government is doing to stop the exploitation of protection visas.
Protection visas are for asylum seekers (or their family members) who face a real risk of significant harm or a real chance of persecution if they return to their home country - they are not for people who just want to stay in Australia to work. The Australian Government is taking action to stop people exploiting Australia’s Protection visa system while ensuring those who need asylum are quickly granted protection.
Throughout September, community information sessions are being hosted in Canberra, Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney to inform community leaders and organisations about changes to the Protection visa system. Communities living in Australia have an important role to play in preventing the spread of misinformation to those who are considering applying for a Protection visa.
This event is co-hosted by Polaron Language Services and the ANU Centre for European Studies with the support of its Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence “Leadership Emerging from Migration, Ethnicity, Race and Gender in Australia and the EU” (of the EU Erasmus+ Programme). It is also supported by local community organisations.
Senior representatives from the Department of Home Affairs will speak about the changes to Protection visas and the resources (in various languages) that are made available.
This is a free, registration-only event. Registrations close at 2:00 PM AEST on the 11th of September 2024.
