The ANU Centre for European Studies and the Embassy of Ukraine are pleased to invite you to a lecture by Dr Olesya Khromeychuk.

Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, Ukraine has surprised the world with a unity and resilience that few expected. This surprise is due partly to a lack of understanding and appreciation of Ukraine’s history, combined with the dominance of Russia’s imperialistic narrative. Ukraine's multilingualism and multiculturalism, for example, have been often perceived as a source of division. A closer and more nuanced look at the history of this country and its people can help explain the origins of Ukraine’s unity and strength.

Dr Olesya Khromeychuk is a historian and writer. She has taught the history of East-Central Europe at the University of Cambridge, University College London, the University of East Anglia, and King’s College London, and written for the New York Review of Books, Der Spiegel, the Los Angeles Review of Books, openDemocracy and Prospect. Khromeychuk is the author of The Death of a Soldier Told by His Sister (2022) and ‘Undetermined’ Ukrainians. Post-War Narratives of the Waffen SS ‘Galicia’ Division (2013). She is currently the Director of the Ukrainian Institute London.

Introductory remarks will be made by Ambassador of Ukraine, His Excellency Vasyl Myroshnychenko. The lecture will be followed by discussant comments from Dr Sonia Mycak (ANUCES) and Q&A moderated by Dr Katarzyna Williams (ANUCES).
