Australia and European Integration: Historical Perspectives

The contribution of Dr Ben Wellings is now available as: MP3 (please listen to the file below).

The March 1962 appointment of Sir Edwin McCarthy as Australia’s Ambassador to the European Communities marked the beginning of Australia’s formal representation to what is now the European Union. This two-day conference seeks to put that moment in the context of time, as it was a milestone in the long-term development of Australia’s relations with Europe. The conference brings together Australia-based historians to reflect on various aspects of Australia’s relations with Europe and the wider implications of the long process of European integration for Australian economy and society.
