ANUCES and Freilich Foundation Summer School for Graduate Students

An interdisciplinary Summer School for graduate students from January 16th to 19th, 2011 at the Australian National University.

Final Program available

The arrival of ‘boat people’ on Australian shores has provoked vigorous public debate
about how Australia should respond. The Summer School for 2011 will explore this
question, providing participants with a wide array of accurate and up-to-date resources
and the opportunity to engage with experts in the field. The summer school will include a
comparison with the situation in Europe.

Topics covered in the summer school will include:

  • How do we define a refugee?
  • What are the international laws and international and regional bodies which regulate refugees and asylum seekers?
  • How do countries around the world respond to refugees?
  • How do the different histories & politics of Europe and Australia shape their responses to refugees?
  • What issues do refugees face in their resettlement into their host societies?
  • How are refugees and asylum-seekers portrayed in the media and in political debate?
